Dear George W Bush:
Obesity is a major problem in America and I feel it’s about time we did something productive about it. I am a student at Lakota Ridge Junior High School (7th grade) and I am worried about obesity in our great nation. I, along with others feel that obesity is already a big problem in our work based ethnic society, especially in adolescents. Breitbart.com states, “The scourge of obesity, bringing in its train a host of health and economic problems that could one day cripple economies, is more prevalent in some countries than others, but still constitutes a global epidemic, says WHO” (author unknown 1).Some people overeat to hide sadness or stress related problems/other. In adolescence, it’s more common to find the symptom of BDD (Body Dyismorfic Disorder). It is an ailment in which one concentrates on their appearance or feels like they need control that they don’t have but they really do or the sense of insecurity. Sometimes they feel so strongly about their appearance that they feel fat if they are 128 lbs. This may lead to compulsive overeating in some different situations. As studies have shown, people starting from age 12 to 28 feel insecure, and since the adult brain has not matured fully until ages 28-29 you can see how the average American can change eating habits that may have dier consequences, some of which I will share with you.
You see, because most Americans don’t have any “free time” in of which you can freely do what you want in your free time and not worry about some thing that you have to do because there are to many responsibilities that you have to worry about, such as a report, a job, or a client you deal with because the stream of work is so tight you can’t just not have responsibilities even the homeless have responsibilities every day to find food. And because of this you get stress and some in stress as I stated previously it may cause a very strong eating disorder in which it is hard to break from your daily routine. In the research I conducted for this letter I found important information that aso.org stated, “obesity is a complex and multi-factorial disease. At a simple level, weigh is only gained when it exceeds net energy expenditure over a prolonged period of time – i.e. when the individual is in energy balance however, it is not always possible to identify a single explanation as to why this individuals and not in others” (author unknown). Because so many people are obese in America, the food total goes up to 70 billion dollars per year( that’s $70,000,000,000.00 written out). It’s more deadly than smoking but that may be because smoking in America has been declining where as obesity has been rising it makes you wonder if when they stop smoking they start eating to substitute the urge to smoke. And because so many Americans are over weight, every year 300,000 people die from obesity each year mostly because of poor diet control. It also causes back problems, breathing difficulties, pressure problems on joints and muscles, skin problems, diabetes in some cases, and other health issues. There ways you can help with this problem and I will suggest a few.
One way we can stop obesity is by stopping it in adolescents. You can increase the activity in school functions and not put it in just one class, for example the mile run would be bad if you are already out of shape and you run, it may help for a little bit but the sweat/calories/fat you burn will be restored within the week even with separate activities. While the kids are young as in pre k through elementary kids still have a lot of energy but as they get older it begins to diminish and that is where the fat begins to stick to you instead of it being burned/worked off in your daily routine as you play. So we need to get kids more active in their lives so that we can see a brighter future. Another way would be to create stronger laws that every food service has to follow such as safe health foods like using 1% milk to make milkshakes, or pizza with out all the fat, calories, and grease they are made with today. I mean come on, there’s no denying that we as Americans are lazy and it’s the truth but there are some situations in which even if you do do your best to stay in shape it’s the foods you eat that get you. So if we made the food healthier many people would decrease in size. And I don’t just mean that we should make healthier foods optional I mean to completely substitute the unhealthy foods with their healthier counter parts. Another way we can stop obesity is by having a national work out ethnic of some sort. Asia has martial arts which is physically and spiritually cleansing and they have 60million people obese which is a lot better than we’re doing. A different way we can stop obesity is to reduce. As in to not get the pie over the fruits barrage on the restaurants menu for dessert. And to have a balanced diet and to drink at least 8 cups of water and one cup of milk a day. I know people give you a hard time with the war but I still like you, but also don’t forget that the small issues in America are the most serious. With all of the information that I have provided I hope you will take them into consideration to lead to a time where obesity is really low if not there at all and there will be one less problem in the world and I can finally check it off my list.
Thanks
Sincerely,
Randon
